"show me your working"
Primary maths (or math, if you prefer) builds level on level: a gap in Primary 3 fractions shows up as a Primary 5 ratio problem. In a class of six the teacher sees exactly which step a child is missing and fixes it in that lesson, which is the whole reason we cap the class.
What does each level cover in Primary Maths?
Classes are grouped by level so the pace matches the school year. The focus areas below follow the current MOE syllabus; the exact topic order follows each school's term.

What is the PSLE Maths format?
PSLE Mathematics has two papers. Paper 1 is done without a calculator and covers multiple choice and short-answer questions. Paper 2 allows a calculator and carries the longer word problems where model drawing and heuristics decide the marks. Our P6 classes sit both papers under timed conditions, then spend the following lesson on the errors, because a corrected mistake is worth more than a new worksheet.
How does a Maths lesson with six students run?
The teacher checks last week's practice from every child, teaches the topic the school is on this term, then moves between six desks while the class works. Every child reads, explains or answers out loud every lesson. Children who finish early get extension questions; children who are stuck get the teacher beside them. One specific thing goes home for the week. Read more about why we cap at six.
Where do primary school students lose Maths marks?
Word problems (problem sums) with no model
The child reads the question and guesses an operation. We teach model drawing from Primary 3 and heuristics for each question type, so the method is visible before the arithmetic starts.
Careless errors
Most are not careless; they are a missing checking routine. We build one: units, reasonableness of the answer, and re-reading the question before writing the final line.
Fractions, ratio and percentage treated as three topics
They are one idea in three notations. Seeing the link is what makes Primary 5 and 6 questions solvable.
Calculator discipline
Introduced in Primary 5, and misused in Primary 6. We practise when to use it and when the working still has to be shown.

Questions parents ask about Primary Maths tuition
Do you teach model drawing and heuristics?
Yes. Model drawing is introduced from Primary 3 and heuristics for word problems are built up level by level. We mark the method, not just the answer, because a child who can explain the steps can handle a question they have never seen before.
Do you teach Foundation Maths?
Please ask us. Whether we run a separate Foundation Maths class depends on demand at each centre; tell us your child's subject band when you book and we will advise on the right class.
Do your classes follow the MOE syllabus?
Yes. Each class follows the MOE primary syllabus for its level and the school term, so what your child does at WhaleYou lines up with homework and school exams. In Primary 5 and 6, practice moves to PSLE format.
How many students are in a WhaleYou class?
Never more than six. Every Primary 1 to 6 class at WhaleYou Learning is capped at 6 students with one teacher, at both Beauty World Centre and Alexandra Central. If a class is full we open a new one or waitlist; we do not add a seventh chair.
How much does a lesson cost?
$50 per lesson for Primary 1 to 3, $55 for Primary 4 to 5 and $60 for Primary 6, for every subject and at both centres. A trial lesson is $20. Full details are on the fees page.
How does the $20 trial lesson work?
Your child joins a real class of six or fewer for one full lesson, at either centre. The teacher then shares what they noticed and whether the class is the right fit. There is no obligation to continue, and no sales talk.
