For many families Chinese is the subject that needs the most support at home and gets the least. Our classes give children the reading, writing and speaking practice that a busy or non-Mandarin household cannot always provide, in a class small enough that every child reads aloud and is corrected every lesson.
What does each level cover in Primary Chinese?
Classes are grouped by level so the pace matches the school year. The focus areas below follow the current MOE syllabus; the exact topic order follows each school's term.

What is the PSLE Chinese format?
PSLE Chinese has four papers: Writing (composition and situational writing), Language Use and Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, and Oral (reading aloud and a conversation based on a video stimulus). Oral and listening carry real weight, which is why our classes practise them every term instead of in the final weeks. Higher Chinese support depends on demand at each centre; ask us when you book.
How does a Chinese lesson with six students run?
The teacher checks last week's practice from every child, teaches the topic the school is on this term, then moves between six desks while the class works. Every child reads, explains or answers out loud every lesson. Children who finish early get extension questions; children who are stuck get the teacher beside them. One specific thing goes home for the week. Read more about why we cap at six.
Where do primary school students lose Chinese marks?
Too few characters recognised
Comprehension collapses when a child cannot read the passage. We track 识字 progress level by level and build vocabulary in context, not from lists.
Compositions that run out of words
A plan, a bank of usable phrases per topic type, and a structure that markers reward. Marked compositions come back with specific fixes.
Oral nerves
Reading aloud and conversation every lesson, so the exam is a familiar routine.
No Mandarin at home
Common, and workable. Class time provides the spoken practice, and the teacher suggests simple daily habits that do not require a Mandarin-speaking parent.

Questions parents ask about Primary Chinese tuition
We do not speak Mandarin at home. Can you still help?
Yes, and this is common. With six students at most, every child reads, speaks and gets corrected in every lesson, which gives the spoken practice a non-Mandarin household cannot provide. Your child's teacher will also suggest simple daily habits that help.
Do you teach Higher Chinese?
Please ask us. Higher Chinese support depends on demand at each centre; tell us your child's level and subject when you book and we will advise.
Do your classes follow the MOE syllabus?
Yes. Each class follows the MOE primary syllabus for its level and the school term, so what your child does at WhaleYou lines up with homework and school exams. In Primary 5 and 6, practice moves to PSLE format.
How many students are in a WhaleYou class?
Never more than six. Every Primary 1 to 6 class at WhaleYou Learning is capped at 6 students with one teacher, at both Beauty World Centre and Alexandra Central. If a class is full we open a new one or waitlist; we do not add a seventh chair.
How much does a lesson cost?
$50 per lesson for Primary 1 to 3, $55 for Primary 4 to 5 and $60 for Primary 6, for every subject and at both centres. A trial lesson is $20. Full details are on the fees page.
How does the $20 trial lesson work?
Your child joins a real class of six or fewer for one full lesson, at either centre. The teacher then shares what they noticed and whether the class is the right fit. There is no obligation to continue, and no sales talk.
